“We are each our own devil, and we make this world our hell.” Oscar Wilde
This is for all those who have ambitions, who want to make a difference, who are different. The world would be nothing without you.
Prologue

The man standing in the mask growled. “I am no hero; I am just trying not to be the villain.” He stated as he left the woman and kid he just saved at police department and disappeared into the night. He left the woman and kid staring into the dark as the police came out to find a tied up mugger would be rapist and his would be victim and kid. A man who never thought he would have this life.

Chapter One

Ronald McBride sneered as he walked into his little house. He could not stand this world. But they needed him, rather he liked it or not. He was just looking for redemption from all the things he has done in his thirty one years. He sat at his desk and looked at the file in front of him. He sighed. People are in essence lazy. Those who aren’t are seen as ambitious, greedy, or even evil. He was seen as evil. Pure evil. He pushed the boundaries in his work. He just wanted to cure those things that took people from their loved ones. Those that people have deemed the work of the devil himself. Cancer was a big one. He closed his eyes as an image of his kid sister lying wasting away as the cancer ate at her six year old body. He pushed to become a medical researcher. He would cure cancer one day. He used the military to pay for his college but killing as he did his ledger still was bleeding red and always would. But this. This saving people thing would help while he fought to not lose himself in his work. His work with stem cells, with cloning, with killing, with annihilating cancer, because sometimes he could understand why people called him evil. Because in the end humans in essence are lazy. Those who aren’t are seen as ambitious, greedy or evil. And sometimes evil is just to greatly misunderstood for that evil to do anything but evil things… but sometimes… just sometimes… rare in fact… from that evil a hero is born. And as Ronald watched the video of his last failed experiment to annihilating cancer, as the person died in pain, he hoped that he could become that hero as he remembered a promise to his light in this darkness.

Twenty Years Before

Ronald looked at the white hospital bed. He was a fourteen year old genius. But nobody needed to be a genius to see what was happening. His sister. His light in the darkness was dying. His father was an abusive bastard and ran off when his sister was only three. His mother was addicted to pain pills and booze. So for his sister he pushed through. For his sister he went to school and worked odd jobs. For his sister and now she was dying. And there was nothing he could do. The cancer to advance. An evil in the world that bred evil. The darkness he knew he had inside of him was aching to break free. To make the doctors pay for not saving his light. To make his parents pay for making him feel this pain. To make them pay for not protecting his light. He stood in this hospital room in Iowa City, hours from his home in the middle of nowhere Iowa; and vowed that even if he had to become a greater evil than cancer he would destroy this evil that had been unleashed upon the world and took his light. He moved and took his sister’s hand. “My light. Helen, don’t hold on to the pain. Go home. Go to heaven and I promise you my light in the darkness that I will destroy this evil. Even if I have to become a greater one. I love you my Light. My sister. My Helen. I love you.”

The little girl on the bed. “I will always be with you, my king. My savior. My hero. Show the world that hero. Nothing you do will ever make me love you less.”

Ronald cried into her hand. “To wise beyond your years my sweet sister. I will always hold you close to my heart. My soul. My light. Even if the world is expecting the worst I will show them the best. I swear to you.”

“I love you my king. My brother.” Helen stated as she closed her eyes.

Ronald stayed with her. He knew she wouldn’t last the night. He knew that she even knew that soon she would be an angel. He wasn’t sure if he believed in God but he was sure there had to be something for Helen’s soul to find peace in when she was taken so early in life. It was unfair that she didn’t get to live and he, who though smart, was going down a bad path, even if he loved her and tried to not go down the worst path. He avoided the gangs and the drugs. But the violence and the delinquent behavior had gotten him with a Juvie rapt sheet. He looked at his angel. His sister, his tears blurred his vision. He stayed and held her hand and cried. It was the early morning hours when the alarms went off. He stayed with her as she took her last breaths. He had gotten his mother to sign a DNR for Helen. The pain too much and he never wanted his sister in pain. Never. He closed his eyes in pain as the doctor declared her death. January 1st 1999 0115 hours. It was the day the light that kept his darkness back flickered and always went out. Instead it dimmed and went to the back of his soul for when it was needed. Until then the light seemed to know the boy, the young man, needed to work out his grief with the darkness.

Ronald McBride stared at the small grave. It had been two years since he held his sister as she died. Helen Anna McBride May 16th 1992 to January 1st 1999. Beloved Sister. A Light In The Darkness. He was sixteen now and just got permission to join the Marines. He had graduated high school and even had a college degree now. Medical school was almost done, but his biochemistry and organic chemistry doctorates were next. He would destroy the evil that took his light. But for now he would do his duty to his country and the Marines were going to help him pay his college loans. And they allowed him to work out his darkness.

Chapter Two

Ronald came back to the present. He shook his head as he made his notes. He couldn’t allow himself to get lost in the past. Too much of the present depended on him to be lost in the past. He stood and stopped the video after he had made his notes. The last formula had been a disaster. It not only did not work. It killed the test subject. He should feel some remorse for killing the man but the man knew the risks. And he was dying from the work of the devil anyways. Ronald poured himself a glass of whiskey and sat down in front of the television. He hit the on button to some sports channel. He allowed himself to be lost in the college basketball game as calculations churned in the back of his mind. The next formula would have to work. And he would have to work harder on making his amends. After all he had too much blood dripping from his ledger. He was about to turn off the television when the news started. He was intrigued when he heard his research company’s name.

“Today it was announced by The Helen Anna Foundation that the owner and main research Dr. Ronald McBride was stepping down as CEO and focusing solely on research. Dr. McBride is known for his controversial treatments of cancer and other deceases that have nicknamed the man the Harbinger of Death.” The blonde news reported started.

Ronald snorted and turned off the television. When he cured cancer he would be hailed as a hero. All his medical advancements he had been part of, from finding a way to head off the flu to making a better drug cocktail for AIDS were all hated and got him the title of ‘Evil’ from the media and general public until he perfected the formulas and then suddenly he was a hero and winning prizes. But the news reporter was right about one thing. He stepped down and allowed his board to take over. He just could not stand the day to day running of the research company. He belonged in his lab. And he may be ‘evil’ but this evil was created to keep anybody else from losing their light in the darkness of a hard life.

Ronald went into his bedroom and ran his hand over the last picture he had of his sister. “Soon sister. Soon my little light I will make you proud. Until then I will be an unknown ‘hero’ while I work on this true evil of the world.” Anybody that would have been listening would have to be a complete idiot to miss the sarcasm in the word hero. He stripped and got into bed and by the time his head hit the pillow he was asleep.

The next morning he was in his lab working with enzymes and other things to battle his demon. He was reading an article about a Swedish doctor who was injecting cancer cells with heroin. It was destroying the cells and ‘curing’ the cancer. Something was not adding up totally though and the heroin addiction would be just as bad as the cancer and soon healthy cells would kill each other because of the addiction. But injecting cells… now that doctor may be on to something there. Hmmm… he put on his music load. He smirked. He loved music. It was something from his old life and his life as a Marine and research that stayed. He turned it up and started bouncing around as he worked on his huge dry erase boards and chalk boards. He kept them for sentimental reasons. When he told his sister his dream she had looked at him with awe and said ‘You totally have to have huge room long chalk boards! Like the scientists in the old movies!’ Ronald had laughed and promised her, he always would.

He got into his grove as he bounced form board to board. “You I need. You I don’t.” He talked to himself as he worked. It was how he worked best. Talking it out to the light that always stayed with him; that one that never left him and kept him from becoming the evil the world viewed him as. He crossed out a large equation. “You are just annoying!” He went and added a few more equations to the board and looked at the particles. It was after many hours, many songs, many cups of coffee and computer reminders to eat that he left his lab. He threw on the ski mask, hooded jacket, and black pants. He was going for a walk. He might be able to protect another tonight. Help clear out that blood in his ledger.

Chapter Three

Ronald walked the streets and stopped a few drug dealers from dealing to kids. Scared the kids and delivered the dealers to the cops. He also stopped a few more muggings and attacks. Nothing every really large. But who knows what life would be saved by the smallest actions on his behalf. He liked to think he saved them at least the pain. He did this every night. It saved him from going crazy and becoming to obsessed with his greatest ambition. After all those who are ambitious are views as abnormal in this world. He shook his head. One day. One day for all the evil he had done he would rid this world of a devil. For his light. For her memory. So another person won’t ever know what it is like to see their light in their darkness snuffed out way to early.

This was his life. His penance. After Helen died he straightened up just enough to graduate school. He had long ago got his GED and had been taking college classes though the fighting and the arrests were sealed now he still knew of them. Then he got into a bad situation. Bad. He needed money to pay for some classes and he finally allowed a gang member to tempt him into the money. It was his first and only run for the man. And he was arrested. He was sixteen. His life would have been over. But the judge had taken pity on him. Told him to join the military and learn some discipline and he would wipe this incident off his record. He joined the Marines. He was good at what he did. They helped pay off the college loans. Then 9/11 happened and things changed. Suddenly he was fighting a war. He was killing people. Innocent or not. He never wanted that. But it was killed or be killed and his darkness took over just a bit more so that he did not lose himself to the things he was forced to do to keep his country safe. To make sure he made it out of the war alive. He moved up the ranks quickly the six years he was in the Marines. He left as a Gunnery Sargent. He refused to become an officer just become he had a college degree. He was an enlisted Marine. But he had made some calls. Took lives. And that… that weighed on his mind. And on that light that kept burning in the back of his mind so he never lost himself to his darkness.

So he left the Marines and started his research company. He hadn’t many expenses in the Marines and with his degrees he first got grants. The business grew quickly. And soon many things were coming out to help the sick. But the media labeled him evil. He went beyond what they called humane and moral. But then praised him when it was all said and done. Always the villain, always evil. People forgot that advancement came at a price. But then he always thought humans were lazy. As a whole. Humanity has become lazy and anybody with ambitions as great as his were labeled wrong. Evil. He has faced many trails to get where he was. Paid many fines for his trails. Watched many lives lost. But in the end everything would be worth it. In the end more lives would be saved. Because failing wasn’t an option to Ronald McBride. He would not, could not fail in this; because then he might never gain that redemption he needs to see his sister once more when his time comes that God or whatever higher being takes him home to her.

Ronald snapped out of his thoughts of the past when he heard a scream. He ran to find a gang circling a couple of teen girls. He growled. “I would leave boys.”

“What can one man do to us! We have guns!” The supposed leader yelled.

Ronald was glad for his time in the Marines and soon took all five of the boys down and called the cops. He waited in the shadows as the cops came and arrested the boys and comforted and got the girls’ statements. He left before they could even think to say thank you. Shock is great for escaping the situations one does not want to be in. He left after the cops did and headed home.

Chapter Four

Over the months he saw this ‘vigilante’ being hailed as a hero. He snorted. Oh he knew of heroes. Police Officers. Fire Fighters. Soldiers. Marines. Sailors. Doctors. But he wasn’t one them. No matter what anybody stated. Oh many saw him as such. Just as many that called him evil. He threw the newspaper down. How had this gotten out of hand? He went down to his lab. He had work he must do. He had to get this done. Something was telling him his time would be over soon. He just hoped he could gain his peace.

Months went on, and every night he tried to keep people safe, while he worked all day trying to save people from a true evil of the world. Months in which the news was calling his nighttime persona a hero and his public persona the villain. He was both the villain of the story and the hero of the story. He sometimes smirked at that. The irony.

Years went by of this. Soon he was feeling he was close. So close. The final tests were set and soon he would have beaten the evil that killed his sister. He looked at the chalk boards. The final equations on them. He smiled. This would work. He set up the whole thing that night. And then the trails started in the morning. The weeks went by and he watched as the patients were injected right into the cancerous cells with his new drug. No addiction. No attacking healthy cells. It was working. The news was hailing him a hero, when he was once a villain. And that night. That night he went out and did his duty to the public. To help clear the blood that would never be cleared. His ledger would always be in the red. Even with this new ‘cure’, but he could try. And hope that God was merciful and allowed him to see his sister before he was sent to hell for his punishment.

He ran when he heard a screen of a child. A little girl with blonde curls was screaming over the body of her mother as her brother tried to protect them. It reminded him so much of his life. The ‘father’ was beating on them. He didn’t think of the consequences when he thought of the knife and tackled the man. The fight was fierce but the man was in his thirties and Ronald was now a man in his late sixties. But Ronald wouldn’t allow these children to live the life he had. He wouldn’t. He fought. He felt the knife as it entered his chest; just as he got his arms around the neck of the man. He twisted. Killing the man and then fell to the ground. He was bleeding out. Help wasn’t going to make it. He could hear the teenage boy calling the cops. He took shallow breaths. He looked over when he felt his mask taken off. The little girl looking into his eyes. The little girl had crystal blue eyes. He was so reminded of Helen. “What… is… your… name?” He got out.

“My name is Anna. Anna Helen Willams.”

“That… is a lovely… name.” Ronald smiled. “My sister was named Helen Anna… she was my soul.”

Anna smiled and took his hand. “You are going to go be with her?”

“I hope…”

“You are a hero!” Anna smiled.

“I am no hero… just a man trying not to become the villain…” He whispered.

“But you are my hero. You saved my mom, my brother and myself.”

“Just a man…” Ronald gasped.

The little girl looked at him as he took his last breaths. “Your sister will tell you the truth when you see her again. Thank you my hero.” The little girl kissed his check as Ronald took his last breaths.

The sirens were in the background but they would be too late. He had no regrets about the way he died. He saved the little girl. His last living thoughts were he hoped that his sister would still love him after all that he had done. And that he had become. And all that he was. Evil. Ambitious. Driven. A man trying not to be a villain.

Epilogue

“Ronald Ross McBride.” A voice stated.

Ronald blinked at the bright light. Pearly gates? How… cliché. “Yes?”

The man smiled. “I have someone here to meet you. Welcome home.”

Just then a blonde hair girl with crystal blue eyes ran to him. “Ronnie!” She threw herself at him. “You are home!”

Ronald looked down at his sister. “Helen.” He whispered. “My light.”

“Welcome home, my king. My savior. My protector. My hero.”

“Not a hero… just a man trying not to be a villain.” Ronald stated.

“That is all a hero is Ronnie. Just a man trying to gain redemption and trying not to be a villain. That is all a hero is Ronnie. Now let me show you our heaven.” Helen smiled as she led Ronald through the cliché pearly gates. And Ronald could not help but to smile and for the first time in many of years he felt peace.

Dear Diary… Coming Soon!

I could hear the buzzing of the voices around me. I knew something was wrong with what I was hearing. But I couldn’t figure out what. What was the problem with the buzzing? I pushed out with my senses. The dairy. I hear them talking about the dairy I left them when… When I killed myself. I look at the cloaked man in front of me. “What happens now?”
He smirks. “You my dear little reaper, get to be under my rule.  You will read teen dairies and point their parents into saving them. Where yours failed you.” He paused. “You dear Raven will be my messenger to help prevent needless death.” he pressed his hand upon my wrists where I could still see the slits from where I had cut myself. I felt a burn and I looked down to see two small ravens. “My dear Harbringer… Enjoy.” He snapped his fingers and I found myself sitting in a room much like my old bedroom with shelves full of dairies. It takes me a few hours to wrap my heard around my fate. I sigh and pick up the first one.

Contrary to many beliefs I am not a stupid person.  In fact I have a very  high IQ and can figure out almost any issue or problem.  Then why do people believe me to be uneducated and stupid?  I never graduated college.  Just didn’t have the money or the attention span.  But I work, make good money to.  In fact I am your typical middle class, maybe lower middle class, working woman.  What makes me different than most though is one simple fact.  That fact?  I am a serial killer.  Yep.  Dead bodies all over.  What shocked?  You thought you were going to read the journal of a nice Catholic girl?  Well you are, but I happen to have a dark side one that hunts down the scum of our society and kills them.  It wasn’t something that I sought out.   But then again some are born to greatness, others achieve it and others like myself never wanted it but had it thrust upon us.  How am I any different than the ones I kill?  Easy.  I have a heavenly presence demanding I kill them.  They are true monsters the ones I kill.  Soulless Demons and I hunt them down and kill them.  These are my stories.  My name?  Agnes Francis Black also known as The Huntress.  So join me in reading my last words…

A GUARDIAN’S LIFE: THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS

“Yeah. Look, I can take care of Wrath…” I never got to finish my sentence as Wrath broke through my window. I immediately went into fighting mode, as did Careia, but I pushed her behind me.
“You lost last time, Catherine. Why are you trying again?”
“I will not lose this time. And, Satan, you belong in hell.”
“Ooo… Scary. I am shaking in my boots.” Wrath launched himself at me.
But I was prepared, and pushed him back. We both went through the window, falling to the ground. I hoped that nobody was below us; it was too late to take back my actions. We crashed to the ground. “Satan, can’t we do this the easy way?”
“No, I am going to finally kill you. You will die a Guardian’s true death!”
“I don’t think so. This time you will not win against me. I will not be going to hell today, but you will be.” I told him calmly as I prepared to attack.
“I don’t think so mutt!” Wrath screamed at me and jumped at me.
Of course I fought back. I matched him hit for hit. I heard him summon the horseman and the Devil’s Lap Dogs. “You think he will be able to help you this time? I am not that green Guardian anymore who let feelings and emotions rule her. I am the very being that monsters fear! You are a thing that bumps in the night; and I am a monster who bumps back!”
“You won’t win; your soul will go to limbo for eternity!” Wrath stated as the horseman came into sight.
“Yes I will.” I took a knife from my side and aimed right for the horseman’s core and threw my knife with everything I had. I watched as the horseman exploded in a ball of flames, and I watched as James and my boys pulled up. I knew they would fight. “The Devil’s Lap Dogs, take them out! You need to aim for the heart!” I yelled as Wrath picked me up and threw me as far as he could, which is pretty far.
The back and forth with me and Wrath seemed to go on for hours. Somehow we ended up in front of a baseball diamond. I knew there were people in there, but I had to end this, and I had to get him away from the crowd. But before I could do anything he attacked, and I acted out of pure instinct, as I transformed into my Gray Wolf/Demon persona.
I threw him through the diamond right onto the field. I walked in like I owned the place; I went to him picking him up by the collar. I realized the National Anthem was being sang, the shock was evident on the singer’s face. But I held Wrath still as he finished. After the song finished I turned to the singer, “thank you.” I threw Wrath over the wall, and followed him over the wall.
“You will pay for that, Catherine.” Wrath sneered at me, as he picked himself up off the ground.
“Maybe, but not tonight.” I pulled my sword from my back, as I transformed back into myself. Finally I was calm.
“You need your demonic strength to bring me down!” Wrath said as he stood up, and transformed into his true self.
“No, no I don’t.” I said with a smile, as my husband’s arrow hit Wrath square in the back, piercing his heart. “I don’t need to be demonic to beat you because I have a family… I have love.” I said as Wrath turned to dust.

The Monster Within
Katherine Rochholz
I flip the channels on the television.  I am sick of all these black and white monster movies.  They were big in the 1940’s.  Now that was a time to live in for a monster.  They started to romanticize us; I had a blast.  I miss those days.  Where I could at least be myself; until they started to romanticize the monsters, we were hunted.  And a hunt is how I ended up the monster I am.  This is my story.
“Henry,” my wife called out to me.  “Lord Baron is at the door.”
I looked up from my journal.  I couldn’t stand that man, but he was the leader of our little group of monster hunters.  “Coming, love.”  I stood up from my desk and threw my journal in the drawer locking it.
“Henry!  Old man, how are you?”  Lord Baron greeted me as I walked into the drawing room.
“Jacob.”  I said in a way of greeting.  “What has caused the pleasure of your company?”
“Heard about a monster or two, werewolves I think.  I am not sure if it is only one or two, but it seems like a lot of death for just one.”
“They are nasty things to hunt during the full moon cycle.  Do we have an idea who their mortal host is?”
“No.”  Jacob stated simply as the maid set down our tea tray, a tray I knew would sit untouched, but it was the proper thing to offer.
            “Tea?”
            “How about a nice brandy?”
I knew he would ask, so I walked to the bar and poured him a good portion.  “Here you are.”  I stated and sat down across from him.
“So when do you want to start the hunt?”
“Tomorrow night is the first night of the full moon.”
            “Fine.  You contact the others?”
“Of course.  How is that little project to try to increase our strength going?”
“I am going to test it on myself later.”
“Shouldn’t you try it on a servant first?”
“Should the servants really have that much strength if it works?”  I said, though I was a fair boss and didn’t believe my help was below myself, I didn’t want to endanger their lives, however Lord Baron thought otherwise.
“Fair point.  Let me know how it goes.”  Jacob finished his brandy and stood up to leave.
I stood with him.  “Jacob, until tomorrow.”  I stated and showed him out.
“What did he want?”  My wife asked.
“Love, just business.  We are going to have a meeting tomorrow night.  I won’t be back until late.”
            “I hate your meetings.”
“I know, but they must happen.”  I kissed my wife’s check and retreated back to my study.
I pulled out my journal once more and started to look over my notes.  I had brewed the formula yesterday, and let it set.  It was a moment of truth.  A moment that would have defined our hunting expeditions.
I drank it.  At first nothing happened and then a burning sensation traveled through me.  It threw me to the ground; I thought I for sure was going to die.  But I didn’t.  I stood up.  Nothing about me had changed.  I was upset.  I tried to pick up the desk but could not; that meant the last three months were for naught.  I would have to start from scratch again another day.
The next night I took my horse and rode off to meet up with Jacob and the rest of the group of hunters.  When I got there they were all there looking quite worried, the town had already been destroyed by the monsters.  The moon wasn’t even up fully yet.  What type of being were we dealing with?  “What happened?”  I asked.
“We do not know.  The moon isn’t even high in the sky.”  Jacob responded.
            “What are we dealing with?”
“A monster of the likes we have never seen before.”  An older man came up to us.
“Lord Earle.”  I said in way of a greeting.
“Henry, my man.  Did your potion work?”
“Richard, it did not I am afraid.  It is back to the beginning.”
“Pity.  I have a feeling we could have used it with this beast.”
“Well, let’s get to it.”  Jacob stated and mounted his horse.
We rode in silence.  It seemed like days, but only hours before we heard the howl.  We knew that it was only a matter of time before it was upon us.  We jumped off our horses and prepared for the beast.  We waited only moments but it felt an eternity.
The beast came into the clearing, and I gasped.  It was huge.  It was larger than any wolf we had hunted before; about three times the size!  Its teeth dripped with blood, it walked on hind legs like a man, but was quick.  Before I could figure out what had happened he had Byron and Richard both on the ground at its feet.  Their throats were ripped from them, and they chocked on their own blood.
I was upset.  So upset that the feeling of death came over me, just like the day before when I had taken my potion.  The next thing I knew was blackness.  When I awoke the next day I lay in a pool of blood.  The bodies of all the hunters as well as a new body, which must have been the wolf, lay dismembered and scattered around me.  There was blood on my hands, in my mouth, and in my hair, all round me there was blood.
I stood and discovered I was naked.  I quickly grabbed a blood stained coat and ran.  The horses were even killed.  I could do nothing but run.  I ran all the way back to town.  I ran to my house and threw myself into my study.  I had no idea what happened.  No clue but I knew I would be labeled a coward.  Because I had lived.
I stayed in my office for days.  I only came out to eat with my wife.  Soon Lord Baron’s nephew and heir came to see me.  I answered the door.  “Lord Baron.”  I said as a greeting.
“Lord Jekyll.”  He came into my foyer, and removed his coat.  “I came to talk about what happened to my uncle.  I take it you were injured which is why you haven’t came out with the rest of the hunters.”
“Yes.  Please come with me to the drawing room.  We can discuss it there.”  I walked into the drawing room and right to the bar.  I poured both of us a large brandy.  “Here you are Lord Baron.”
“Thank you Sir.”  He said and accepted the drink; he took a large drink before speaking.
I sat down across from him and waited.  I was unsure of what he would say.
“I will get to the point.  You are the only one that lived.  What happened?”
“The wolf was larger than any we had ever seen.  It was about three times the size.  It walked upon hind legs.  It attacked.  I ran to attack it, upon seeing Jacob and Richard killed.  The next thing I knew I woke up in a pool of blood.”
“Why did it let you live?”
“We were able to kill it somehow.  I don’t know when or how.”
“It is interesting that you were the only one that lived.  Especially since you tested your concoction on yourself that night my uncle came to tell you about the hunt.”
            “I don’t like you implication.”
            “You don’t have to coward.”
“I am no coward.”  My blood began to boil.  I, again, felt death upon me.  Before I knew it my world had gone black, the last thing I heard was a scream.
I came too just hours later.  I lay quite nude in my drawing room.  Blood and body parts all around me once more, and worse my wife stood in the doorway.  “Love?”
“Mr. Edward Hyde says to congratulate you on finding a woman such as me.”  She stated.
            “Mr. Hyde?”
“He said that was his name.  The monster you became.”
            “I… A monster?”
“Yes.  You killed Lord Baron when he called you a coward.”
            “No…”
“Well, you did not this Mr. Hyde did.  But he is really you…”
I just stared at my wife.  At that moment I knew that I had made a mistake.  In an attempt to play god, God had turned me into the very thing I hated… A monster…
“We will return after these messages.”  The announcer states bringing me back to the present.  I sigh.  My love had long since passed.  She had lived a normal mortal life, by my side.  She loved me no matter the monster I became.  She was the last person to truly accept Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as one in the same.
I turn off the television.  It is playing the 1940’s version of the movie based upon a romanticized version of my life.  My friend Sir Stevenson had written my life as a short story and found his fame.  I sigh and know that one day Mr. Hyde will be back and there was nothing I can do to stop him… Nothing I want to do to stop him… I have finally embraced the monster within…

“But mom, I want to eat my candy!”  Suzie, my five year old, cried at me.

“I have to check the candy first my lovely little witch.”  I told her as I dumped her Halloween candy in the middle of my table.
“Mom, can’t we have one piece?”  My twelve year old, Greg, asked.
I sighed.  “Pick one piece and I will check it.”
“This one!”  Suzie said; she held up a very large lollipop.
I sighed she would be bouncing up and down the walls all night; just what I needed.   I quickly checked the lollipop; I figured at the very least it would keep her quiet for hours.  “Here, Suzie, go put your cartoon in and stay in my sight.”  I said and handed her back the candy.  “Greg?”
“Can I have the liquid candy?”  He asked; he handed me what looked like a blood bag.
“I suppose.”  I said.  I took the bag and checked it for holes or nicks.  “Here” I said; I handed him back his candy.  “Finish your homework and keep an eye on Suzie.”
“Yes, mom!”  Greg went into the living room and pulled out his math book.
I sat down and started to sort the candy, we lived in a good neighborhood, but since my husband was killed in the line of duty three years ago I was a bit more protective than I once was.  I threw away some candy called “Zombie Brains.”  It was a goo candy, but it looked tampered with and there was no way I would let my children ever eat something that even hinted at being tampered with.
After a couple of hours, Suzie fell asleep in front of the T.V. and Greg was dozing next to her.  I piled their candies in their bags and marked them and put them up.  I put them to bed and sat down to work.  I worked from home doing something I never thought I would, but it paid the bills and allowed me to make ends meet now that my husband was gone.  “Hello, this is Natasha.”  I said as the phone beeped in my ear.  I don’t know how I came up with my phone name, but Judith just didn’t sound like a phone sex agent’s name.
I went to wake my children at eight the next morning.  I would sleep while they were at school.  I am glad I stopped to get the paper first.  I opened the door, this child stood in front of my door.  At first I thought the child was just wearing their Halloween costume, until they charged at me.  I didn’t think, I just slammed the door in its face.  I went and checked all doors, and the three windows in our house.
“Mom.”  Greg was up.  “What’s going on?  I heard a crash?”
“Nothing, go back to bed sweetie, they canceled school.”
             “Why?”
“Because you are going to spend the day with your mom.”  I tried to smile.  It must have fooled him.
“Okay.”  He said with a yawn and went back to bed.
I was suddenly very happy there were not windows in the bedrooms.  I turned on news, and was shocked.

“This is just in!  A madman is claiming he created the zombies, he poisoned a candy called “Zombie Brains” and then proceeded to give it out to the children in his neighborhood.  We have footage of the neighborhood.  Just stay inside and lock your doors.  Bullets to the head do seem to work, if one gets in.” The news anchor reported.

The camera shot to what I knew to be footage of our neighborhood.  I am so glad I disposed of that candy last night.  There was a young child in the middle of the world.  It looked to be Suzie’s friend, Janey.  She had half her jaw ripped off and her eye hanging out, she was dragging her broken foot and she moved down the middle of the street.  Then I saw Maggie, Janey’s mom.
“Janey!”  Maggie ran to her; she stopped and looked at her child.  “NO!”
Janey charged at her mother, with a speed I never thought of when it came to zombies.  Soon Janey had her mother on the ground and she had bitten into her neck, she left a gaping hole.
I didn’t want to watch.  But I could not turn away as she ripped into her mother’s body and started to eat the organs.  I was going to be sick.  I barely made it to the toilet before I lost last night’s dinner.

I went to my bedroom and opened up the safe I swore that as long as I lived I would never open, my husband’s gun safe.   Then I woke up the kids.  “Babies, get dressed.”

I moved quickly packing food and water.  I packed all the bullets and the handguns.  Greg and Suzie were at the kitchen table eating their cereal.  “Greggy, you remember when dad taught you to shoot?”
            “Yeah why?”
“Baby, look there has been an outbreak.  Zombies.”  I said and flipped on the news, I prayed that it no longer showed Janey.
“Whatever mom.”  Greg said but looked toward the T.V.; thankfully it was the news anchor.
“The virus seems to be spreading rapidly.  It has spread to the whole town.  At nine o’ clock this evening the county will be bombed, and the zombies destroyed.  If you are a living citizen, without any bite marks, or bleeding eyes you have until eight fifty-nine tonight to get out of the county.  This concludes the news.”  The screen went fuzzy.
“We got to go kids.  Stay here while I get the car; do not open the door.”  I left the house; quickly I closed the door behind me.  I keep an eye out for the zombies.  Most of them kids.  I got to the car; I saw one, it on the hood and munched on what looked like a string of intestines.  I raised my rifle, took aim and fired.  The head exploded.  I ran to the car, unlocked it and jumped inside, just as a group of zombies descended upon me.
I turned on the car, backed up quickly and then moved forward and ran over the zombies.  I kept backing up and driving forward until they are all nothing but splotches of blood on my driveway.  I drove the car up to the door; I climbed over the driver seat and pulled open my house door and grabbed my children.

I threw them in the back seat and slammed the door.  I got back into the driver seat and took off; as I ran over a dozen or so more of the miniature zombies.  Mentally I had started to call them mini zombies, rather than acknowledging that they are children.

I just drove; but about three miles from the county boarder and only an hour to go, the car died.  I wanted to cry.  I looked at my babies in the back seat.  Fear in their eyes, their faith in me to make sure they lived.

“Babies, we are going to have to run for it.  I want you to stay next to me.”  I got out of the car did a sweep of the area; there were so many abandoned cars, which can only mean the zombies are around.  “I want you to take this gun Greggy, and stay in front of your sister; I will stay behind, you both.  We have to move quickly.”

“Mommy, I am scared!”  Suzie cried.
I knelt down.  “Suzie Q, I know.  I am scared as well, but we have to make it out of the county sweetie.  Stay behind your brother and don’t look back.”
             “Mom…”
“Greggy, it will all be okay.  Let’s go.”

For most of the trip nothing eventful happened and we could see the blockade.  We had fifteen minutes to make it to the blockade, and then they attacked.

There were hundreds of them, and they all ran towards my babies.  I fired; I didn’t care where I hit.  I did what I could, but I knew that we could never beat them.  I tried; I needed to save my children, I tried to clear a path.  But I couldn’t.  They were able to divide us.  I could barely move; my soul died as I saw my Suzie Q bitten, and another group took my son from me, as they ripped him apart in front of me.  I was surrounded.  I had used all my ammo except for one bullet.  I looked at the thing that was once my Suzie Q, now a brain hungry zombie, an undead creature…  I took aim as I heard the planes over head, and I shot… I killed the zombie that was once my child.  I heard nothing, as the first bombs hit.  My last thought was it was strange that I barely felt the heat, as I headed into the darkness that promised a peaceful, painless oblivion…
