Potions- Caldron Pin

The cauldron is a symbol of transmutation, germination, and transformation. When one thinks of potions they think of cauldrons so it isn’t a shock that Potion Masters choose it as their pin. However, above all is symbolizes the womb, and therefore, is a Goddess symbol as well. There are many beliefs around cauldrons, example in Celtic lore the cauldron is the symbol of the Underworld. Some of the most famous cauldrons are found in Celtic lore. For example, the Daghda cauldron that provided sufficient food for everyone, and the cauldron of Bran the Blessed that conferred rebirth. It came to symbolize the womb of the Great Goddess, this belief arises from the concept that everything is born out of it and returns to it. The original cauldron symbols were gourds, wooden vessels, or large shells. Eventually the symbolism of metal cauldrons became linked to the hearth and home because they were used to cook meals. Cauldrons have held a magical significance in many cultures throughout the centuries. Because of these deep beliefs it is no shock the Potion masters choose this well-known symbol as the

Spells- Wand Pin

The Wand symbolizes power. It is seen from the Bible to fiction and the World of Katy Lily is no different. The Wand is a grounding source for one’s power. The wand and its magical powers had its cultural origins in an ancient symbolic language, which was also used in the narratives of Holy Scripture. For instance, when Moses frequently stretched out his “rod,” miraculous things always followed this symbolized power from God or Divine power. According to theologian Emanuel Swedenborg, in the original language used by ancient shepherds, a rod referred to a traveler’s staff. A traveler’s staff represents the power of supporting the body just as the power of truth supports and serves the soul. This is the reason why shorter “rods” or “staffs” that became known as wands were used by kings to represent the power of truth (from God) residing within their royal proclamations and edicts. These wands used by the royalty were called scepters. A shepherd’s staff symbolized the power they exercised over their flocks. The Romans even used sticks tied together in bundles to symbolize the power of laws that served and promoted the common good of society. It is because of this symbolism that Egyptian magi made use of rods to perform their miracles. Finally, this symbolism was further modified to become a magician’s wand. In Katy Lily the wand is there to harness and balance the elemental magic within the person’s soul. That is why those who master in Spells, also known as Spell Crafters, chose this very ancient symbol as their pin.

History- Book Pin

A book is a physical object, yet it also signifies something abstract, the words and the meanings living within it. At one level a book takes on the imprint of its author and its readers. Books contain the presence of many readers. Yet, more than other objects, a book is felt to embody not only a physical memory but also a record of past thoughts. The book contains both its reader and its author. Milton’s stated books ‘contain a potency of life in them’. The book achieves a further mystery, of transforming what appears to be purely immaterial and conceptual into something with a concrete form. It is therefore not entirely extravagant for Milton to claim that a book possesses ‘a life beyond life’. Destroying a book, then, Milton says, is like an act of homicide—indeed it is worse than that, since a book encloses the life of more than one person and exists in more than one time. Paradoxically, regardless of the material survival of a physical copy or artifact, a book is something immortal and imperishable. Because of this History Masters choose to use the Book, a simple but complex symbol, for their pin.

The Pin of Mythology Masters of The Katy Lily Series

Mythology- Y of Pythagoras Pin

The Pythagorean “Y” shows the two paths in which man is led through life. The right hand track to sacred Virtue tends, Though steep and rough at first, in rest it ends; The other broad and smooth, but from its Crown On rocks the Traveler is tumbled down. He who to Virtue by harsh toils aspires, Subduing pains, worth and renown acquires; But who seeks slothful luxury, and flies, The labor of great acts, dishonored dies.” The above words are attributed to Virgil, but this may be incorrect. The straight portion at the bottom signifies the first, uncertain age, which at that point has been given over to neither vices nor virtues. The bifurcation at the top, however, begins at adolescence. The path to the right is difficult, but it tends toward a blessed life. The path to the left is easier, but it leads to ruin and destruction. As it is shown in Mythology the easiest path is not always the wisest. Thus Mythology Masters chose the Y to represent humanity and Mythology.

Electrokinesis- Axe pin

Electrokinesis is the main study of Spirit Elementals. The Masters of this Element choose the Axe as their Pin. The reasons behind this strange symbol for Electrokinesis stems from folklore, where stone axes were believed to be thunderbolts and were used to guard buildings against lightning as it was believed that lightning never struck the same place twice. In Youba Mythology an Oshe (double bladed axe) was used to represent Shango, Orisha who was their god of thunder and lighting. Steel axes were important in superstitions as well. A thrown axe could keep off a hail storm. Sometimes an axe was placed in the crops, with the cutting edge to the skies to protect the harvest against bad weather. Due to these beliefs and they wanted something with a deeper meaning they chose the Axe as their pin.

Alchemy: The Orphic Egg Pin

The Orphic Egg in the Ancient Greek Orphic tradition is the cosmic egg from which hatched the primordial hermaphroditic deity Phanes/Protogonus who in turn created the other gods. The egg is often depicted with a serpent wound about it. Alchemy masters choose this as their symbol as they tend to create something great from something common. Though Alchemy is most commonly known for the philosopher’s stone, which is a legendary substance, allegedly capable of turning inexpensive metals into gold. It was sometimes believed to be an elixir of life, useful for rejuvenation and possibly for achieving immortality. In the Katy Lily Series Alchemy can turn objects into Gold without the stone. The stone is to become close to immortal. However no self respecting person in the Katy Lily Series would create the stone. The Stone takes the blood of at least 150 infants and many other sacrifices to create. It is the goal of a true evil to make one of these stones.
